TV EQUALS: Supernatural Interview with Eric Kripke – “Sam and Dean will always come together”

By Michelle Carlbert
January 23, 2013

Recently, TV Equals got to be part of a roundtable interview with our fearless leader himself, Eric Kripke. The Kripkeeper was on hand to chat about the latest guide to the show, a book called The Essential Supernatural: On The Road with Sam and Dean Winchester.

Kripke spoke at length about the new book, describing it as an “all-inclusive collection of everything Supernatural,” joking that the beautiful volume was so go that “frankly, it’s far classier than we deserve.”

Regarding what fans will find within its pages, Kripke said the book holds “a history of the show, both for the fans and frankly for the people who are making it. It’s nice for us to remember what the hell we’ve been doing all these years.”

In addition to speaking about the book, Kripke fielded questions about the show itself. Though he doesn’t work as closely on the show as he used to, Kripke said, “Supernatural will always be my first child, I’m incredibly proud of it.” He said that looking through the book, “offered me an opportunity to really look back at what the experience was. I look back emotionally, very much like how you would look back at old photos of your friends and family."

When asked about how Supernatural began all those years ago, and whether or not he ever pictured it delving into some of the deeper storylines it has, Kripke said, “I had a storyline in the back of my head when we began and this sort of five-year plan. It did eventually escalate to facing the devil and facing the apocalypse, but I started out with much more b-movie aspirations. I was a fan of horror movies and would have been happy with just a gory show that was a part “Evil Dead” and part “American Werewolf in London...

WE VANCOUVER: TAPPING INTO GRACE

By Sabrina Furminger
January 23, 2013

... Currently, the fan-dubbed “Queen of Sci-Fi” is in the midst of a transition phase. [Amanda] Tapping’s most recent series, Sanctuary, had been her passion project. Sanctuary began on the web in 2007; the early webisodes were sold directly to viewers via the series’ website. “We were never afraid to say, ‘Let’s try it!’” says Tapping, who was one of its earliest investors. “And that kind of became our can-do attitude, like ‘It’s never been done before? Great! Let’s do it!’

By 2008, Sanctuary had found a home on the SyFy network, and Tapping was both its star and one of its executive producers.

Despite its legions of diehard fans, Sanctuary was cancelled in 2012. For the first time in 15 years, Tapping isn’t a regular on a series. “It’s funny because I’ve always known what’s coming up, and now I don’t, and I’m sort of enjoying the not knowing, but also hating the not knowing,” she said. “I’ve really had to discover who Amanda Tapping is outside of being on a TV series.

This discovery process has led Tapping right to the director’s chair. In 2012, Tapping directed several episodes of Primeval: New World, and an episode of CBC’s top-rated action-adventure drama, Arctic Air, scheduled to air later this spring. “When Arctic Air came along, I was at a bit of a crisis of confidence,” says Tapping. “When I finished Arctic Air, I could not have been happier. It restored a passion that I have for this industry, and it restored a huge amount of confidence that I felt I’d lost...

One thing that keeps her level is her charity work. Tapping is one of the co-founders of Sanctuary for Kids. Its mandate: to improve the lives of children in crisis. Locally, the foundation works with Watari, which transitions homeless youth — including those with children of their own — into housing and new lives. The money comes from online fundraising, as well as the auctions and raffles that take place at GABIT, a convention for dedicated Amanda Tapping fans held annually in England.

[Every] year I bawl like a baby because I can’t believe we’ve raised as much money as we have,” says Tapping. Since November 2009, Sanctuary for Kids has raised more than $455,000 for its charities...

WE VANCOUVER: CHARACTER BUILDING WITH ACTRESS AMANDA TAPPING

By Sabrina Furminger
January 23, 2013

Amanda Tapping has tackled numerous roles over the course of her storied career, but it’s her long-running turns as Samantha ‘Sam’ Carter on Stargate SG-1 (and its spin-offs) and Dr. Helen Magnus on Sanctuary that cemented her status as the Queen of Sci-fi TV...

... But don’t expect Tapping to pick a favourite between the two characters that made her an icon.

I think Helen is more me now, and Sam was me then. I felt very connected to Sam Carter at that stage of my life, and as I came into my own as a woman, she came into her own, and I feel like we grew up together, and now that I sort of have a different perspective, I love Helen,” says Tapping. “I don’t know that I could go back and play Sam Carter. She’d be a very different Sam Carter. She’d have a bit more of an edge, I think, whereas I was ready to play Helen...”

COLLIDER: Jason Momoa Talks Body Count, His Sadistic Villain Character, and Axe Fights on the Set of BULLET TO THE HEAD

by Steve 'Frosty' Weintraub
January 24th, 2013

If you enjoyed watching Jason Momoa kick ass as the warlord Khal Drogo on HBO’s awesome series Game of Thrones, you’ll probably want to check out Bullet to the Head. In director Walter Hill’s action flick, Momoa plays a mercenary who really enjoys killing. During a group interview on the New Orleans set, Momoa described his character as an, “evil sadistic bastard who likes to shoot people in the head.” In addition, Momoa also talked about getting to fight Sylvester Stallone with an ax, how he prepared for the role, the way the action compares to his previous projects, and a lot more...

jason_momoa4A

... Q: You were talking about the training… just what do they put you through and how demanding is it?

sly_stallone_and_jason_momoa1

Jason Momoa: "It’s not that demanding. It’s fun. That’s one of the great things about being an actor. You get to learn all these things normal people don’t get to learn. Going through hallways where it’s basically like S.W.A.T. tactical stuff. Around hallways, how to cross, how to signal everyone. Then how to hold a gun, holster the gun — everything."

Q: Where do they take you to do that?

Jason Momoa: "We went to the gun ranges and stuff like that. 87-11 they hire a bunch of guys, stunt coordinators have a room and we go over everything. At the very end there’s a big axe fight and I pull out my gun… it’s f###### great. In a dilapidated building after I kill everyone. [Stallone] is looking around, I’ve kidnapped his daughter, and I have all these guns and stuff. And I say, ‘Ready for another round?’ And I throw the bags of guns away, and there’s this plaque — ‘the people who tried to save this building’ — and there are two fire axes. So I basically smash that thing open and grab the axes. He shot me a couple of times by surprise. I had a Kevlar vest. I throw him the axe, ‘What are we, Vikings?’ and we star going like a Cuisinart..."

Bullet to the Head cast includes Sylvester Stallone, Sarah Shahi, Jason Momoa, Christian Slater, Holt McCallany, Sung Kang, Adewale Akinnuoye-Agbaje, Brian Van Holt and Jon Seda. The film is in theaters on February 1, 2013.

LIFE ON FIRE - PBS VIDEO: 'ASH RUNNERS' PREVIEW - AIRS WEDNESDAY, JANUARY 30, 2013 AT 10/9C

Narrated by Oscar-winning actor Jeremy Irons, Life on Fire series offers a close up look at volcanoes, providing viewers with a never seen before look at their effect on the environment around them.

Each episode of Life on Fire paints survival stories around different volcanoes. From the dark abyss to pristine snow-capped peaks, spectacular scenery provides the backdrop for the extraordinary animals and plants that have learned to juggle with fire. Each time a volcano erupts, animals have a choice: face the consequences or flee. And because these animals are adapted to living with fire, often they run straight into another volcano and another explosion- out of the frying pan into the fire. Fragile and engaging, these creatures teach us lessons in survival in a world as fascinating as it is dangerous.

Like humans, volcanoes have a natural life cycle: they are born, live for a period then die. Surrounding these giants of fire and ash, natural selection has only retained those capable of adapting to the three phases of an eruption: before, during and after. To give a comprehensive vision of these phenomena, the series shows a number of different volcanoes.

Each film is shot in a specific environment: Tropical island volcanoes in Ash Runners. A look at how animals have adapted to life on the volcanic Papua New Guinea island of New Britain. Included: birds; hermit crabs; flying foxes; butterflies.
